Thursday Throwback: Michael Moffat’s Late Playoff Winner

Michael Moffat’s Goal Sees Ayr United Promoted

Michael Moffat Goal vs Brechin City – 22nd May 2011

What a moment from Michael Moffat.

After a 1-1 draw at Somerset in the first leg, the sides were level going in to the second legĀ at Glebe Park.

With almost 2500 people packed in to the sun drenched but windy ground, this was the promotion playoff final at its best. The winner would be playing in the Championship the following season.

Shortly before half time, Jonathan Tiffoney’s overcooked pass back to his keeper left him red-faced, and his side up against it.

With 15 minutes to go, Mark Roberts equalised. As the clock ticked on, it looked like extra time was inevitable.

That’s when Michael Moffat stepped up.

In the 88th minute, with both sides still pushing for the win, the ball came to Moffat at the edge of the City box.

He controlled it with his right foot and dragged it in to the path of his left foot. The defender perhaps isn’t exactly sure where the goal is, but he is happy for Moffat to take the ball on to his left foot.

He takes a swing at the ball, and rifles it home, hard along the ground. Craig Nelson is powerless to prevent the ball going through his legs, despite having been on top form all afternoon.

It was the goal that won Ayr United promotion, and wild celebrations followed.
